Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church Denison, Texas Sherman Democrat July 4, 1976 Section D, pg.6 SEVEN DENISON CHURCHES ESTABLISHED BEFORE 1900 Denison - At least seven Denison churches date their establishment in 1900 or before. Mount Pleasant Baptist Church was organized in mid-summer of 1872 in the home of James Moore Coffman, a young Baptist minister, son of David H. Coffman, Sr., who gave the land for church and school purposes. A year after the church was organized, a school was built on this land where Layne school now stands. The congregation met in the school building until 1920 when a frame building was built on West Walker. J.K.P. Williams, a well-known Baptist minister, organized the church and was pastor for more than 10 years. Charter members were David H. Coffman Sr. and his wife Harriett, James Moore Coffman and his wife, Temple, Robert Coffman and his wife Maggie, Thomas Coffman his wife Sarah, Mrs. Joe Layne, Mrs. Zeke Williams, Grandma Williams, and J.K.P. Williams. The church moved to its present location on West Morton Street in 1946. The brick building burned in 1951, but it was rebuilt the same year with a second story on the educational wing. Mt.
