It is unknown at what date the Whitewright Methodist Church was organized. Dr. Walter Vernon, North Texas Conference historian of the Methodist Church, states in his books, "Methodism Moves Across North Texas," that the Whitewright Church was first listed by name in conference appointments in 1882.  Early accounts of Whitewright state that two businessmen from nearby Kentuckytown purchased the land on which the town was laid out from a townsight company for the sum of $4,000.
An 1891 map of the city shows the Methodist Episcopal Church on the northwest corner of Block 17. It is not known when this building was erected, but the map shows it to be a substantial church with a spire.
The earliest quarterly conference minutes that the church has in its possession were written January 24, 1885. We know from these minutes that Whitewright had a Methodist Church and it had a parsonage.
