Methodist Church
Whitewright, Texas

In 1875, W. B. Womack, W. T. Sears, R. May, C. W. Bryant and Joe Burghere were elected as a building committee for a new church.
In July, a new pulpit and chairs were placed in the new church. In 1897, a bell was placed in the tower. The new church was built on Block 37, lots 1,2,3. Deeds show the property was bought from Mr. and Mrs. Jennings and Mr. and Mrs. R. May.
The first salary of $350 had grown to $2,000 in 1924. By 1933 the the salary was still set at $2,000, but only $1,487 said to be raised in this depression year. It was lowered in 1936 to $1,000, but the Rev. Dennis, pastor, was paid only $896. Then an upward climb began steadily - in 1975 the salary was set at $7,000. In 1976, the salary was raised to $8,000, plus expenses for utilities paid, insurance, furnished parsonage.
But membership didn't match finances, at least during the depression. In 1934 there were 293 members. In 1932, 206 were enrolled in Sunday School. In 1931, the Epworth League had 30 members.
The first Vacation Church School is mentioned in 1937. In 1965 the membership is 217 and it rose to 230 in 1970 and dropped to 210 in 1976
