Methodist Episcopal Church South
Sherman, Texas

The church congregation went under four different names: Methodist Episcopal Church Souty, Travis Methodist Church, First Methodist Church, and First United Methodist Church.

The Methodist Episcopal Church South of Sherman was established in 1859 with the Rev. J. M. Binkley as pastor.  The first building, a frame structure, was erected in 1860 in the 300 block of South Travis Street.  The building burned in 1885.  For four years the congregation met in the city opera house.  A brick building was erected at the original location and was occupied in 1889. The brick church building was used until 1910.  At this time a new and larger domed structure was erected at North Travis and Mulberry Streets.  The Travis Methodist Church served the community for the next forty-four years.

In 1955, the present structure was erected on Mulberry and Elm Streets on property that once belonged to the Kidd-Key College which was a Methodist school. The church was named First Methodist Church.  In 1968, it became the First United Methodist Church.
