In
January 1862 a "tornadic storm" came over Kentucky Town from the
southeast; then a cloud from the northwest struck the 2-story school.
At the January 11, 1862 church meeting, a committee was appointed
to decide if the church building was worh being repaired after the
storm, if it was, in fact, worth repairing, and ifthey could raise the
necessary amount for the repairs; the committee consisted of Brethren
Connelly, Cowitt, Dean, Head and Moss,
The first meeting took place in February from the church's location "south of Kentucky Town" to a place in Kentucky Town. Apparently the building committee appointed on January 11th found the church building worth repairing. In February a committee consisting of Brethren Thomas Dean, J.L. Gowdy, and D.P. Moss were appointed to oversee the repairs on the church house. The church meeting on October 11, 1862 was held in the school house as the church house had fallen down. During the business meeting three trustees, Brethren Ryon, Bowles and Gowdy, were appointed to dispose of the lumber from the old church house. This committee reported the sale of the lumber from the old church building to the highest bidder for $140.00. At this time, the church voted to hold meetings in the "Reformers' House" until a new house of worship was built. Business on January 10, 1863 a builidng committee was formed to form a plan for building a new church house and to use the money from the sale of the lumber from the old church house to putchase lumber for the new church house. The church continued to hold its worship services through the turbulent 1860s in "borrowed buildings". Source: Joe W. Chumbley. Kentucky Town and Its Bapatist Church. Houston, Texas : D.
