Denison, Texas Iron Ore Baptist Church was organized in the Iron
Ore Community, southwest of Denison, before 1870 where slave parents
settled. It served as roots for many Black churches in
Grayson County. It was located near Elsworth, a Katy stop
between Denison and Sherman.
Rev. Fred Curry was the first pastor. The first deacons were Bro. Wade Hill, Bro. Frank Landrum and Bro. Jerry Brown. At one time the membership reached five hundred. Iron Ore Baptist Church was represented in the Northeast District Association in 1875 by Pastor Rev. R. S. Miller and delegates, Rev. R. Curry, Gus Leeper and Rev. R. Patterson. The church congregations purchased a lot and moved to its present location, 1500 W. Dubois in Denison on April 6, 1922. Services were held under a brush arbor with Rev. Brennon as pastor. The building was purchased from the Golden Rule school, moved and remodeled. The present building was constructed by members Bro. Russell McDade, Bro. Willie Cage and others. When the membership occupied the new building, it was free of debt and dedicated in 1963 under the direction of Rev. Fennell.
