Baptist Church and served as Secretary of the church when the new
$40,000 building was built. In 1891-1892 City Directory, Mr. Terrell is listed as associate editor of the Texas Reformer along with editor Stephen Douglass Russell.
Under the
leadership of Rev. G.B. Williams, 100 converts were baptized at one
time, the largest number in the church’s history. In 1952, under the
leadership of Rev. C.H. Turner, Thurgood Marshall, who later became
the first
black Supreme Court justice, spoke at a regional NAACP convention held
at
Hopewell.
In December 1981, Hopewell was blessed with the current pastor, Rev. C.E. Evans, who has served not only Hopewell but the entire community. Under his leadership, a program was initiated to build the current church at 601 West Bond Street, the northwest corner of Bond Street and Mirick Avenue (Block 3, Stevens Addition), where services are now held. New Hopewell was dedicated in 1995. Old Hopewell was demolished in 2008, but it had stood empty for more than a decade. The Old Hopewell site is now the location of the Terrell-Griggs-Marshall Legacy Park.
