HAVEN CHAPEL CHURCH CELEBRATES 68th ANNIVERSARY
The Haven ChapeL Methocist church, 500 W. Walker, is celebrating its 68th anniversary this week with special services beginning November 19, and closing with an afternoon service, Sunday, the 26th.  Rev. T.R. Watkin is pastor of Haven Chapel.
Dr. H.C. Henderson, pastor of Waples Memorial Methodist church, will deliver the anniversary sermon at the closing program.
Haven Chapel Church was organized here in 1882 by a group of 8 Methodists who had banded themselves together into a prayer group 3 years before.  When the activities of the group became known to ministers in nearby towns, they offered their services to the group.  These 8 persons formed the nucleus of the present organization, which has been active during all the succeeding years, and whose membership has been 200.
Charter members of the church included Mrs. Jennie May Munson, Mrs. Hallis Willie, Rev. E.W. Lott, Mrs. Louise Hubbard and Mrs. Rhoda Stanford.
Those holding 40 to 50 year membership are W.W. Willis, Rev. J.C. Scott, Mrs. M.A. Scott, Sidney Keys, Mrs. Gussie Keys, and Mrs. Mattie Chaney.
Of the original 8, Negro Methodists who were instrumental in organizing the Haven Chapel church, two of them, Rev. E.W. Lott and Mrs. Rhoda Stanford are still active members.
Visiting pastors who will participate in the anniversary program are Rev. C.E. Moore, pastor of St. James Methodist Church, Sherman; Rev. T.S. Singleton, pastor of Quinn Chapel Methodist church.
