Church of Christ Gordonville, Texas The Gordonville Church of Christ
was organized in 1901 and held services in the school house in the Red
Branch Community. The first meeting is believed to be by the
Disciples and held by Bro. E. S. Elkins, baptizing nine people.
Bro. Elkins returned to hold meeting at Red Branch in 1902,
1903, 1910 and 1911.
The 1911 meeting was a revival of about ten days held at Red Branch. The meeting was moved to the Gordonville Community. Since this location was more convenient for many of the members, it was decided to relocate and hold services in the Gordonville Schoolhouse. The following were elected to hold office: Elders: W. J. Brewster, W. O. Brewster, A. S. Higgins; Deacons: A. H. Lewter, H. L. Brewster; Trustees: W. J. Brewster, T. H. Humphry, A. H. Lewter. A lot was purchased from Mr. W. Burden for $75. A sum of $28 was taken from the members' contributions to pay for the lot and Mr. Burden donated the balance to pay for the lot. A deed was made with the following clause: "Upon the expressed conditions that no organ or other musical instruments be used or kept and, that no fair, festival, or other practices unauthorized in the New Testament be held, had, or conducted in, upon, or about the said premises. A large one-room wood building was completed in September 1911. The members of the Congregation donated their labor. The cost of some of the building was recorded in the record books, as follows:
Classes were held in groups
which studied in different corners of the building. Communion
was served each Sunday from a square, spool-leg table, covered with two
white, embroidered cloths which Mrs. W. W. Scarbrough kept starched and
ironed.
Summer outdoor meetings were conducted by Bro. Leroy Brownlow and Bro. George Henry Stephenson, both natives of Collinsville. Baptisms were held in the Red River, north of Gordonville. Other evangelists who held meeting from 1913 to 1931 were: Lee Garrett (Paris,TX), Thomas Milholland (Madill, OK), E. W. McMillon (Gunter, TX), Kirby Bentley, T. M. Carney, Bro. Stricklin, W. N. Carter, Bro. McAPhee, Harvey Scott, R. P. Drennon and Lyle Price. The building was sold to the Sadler Methodist Church in 1958 to be used for classrooms. The new brick building had four class rooms, and an auditorium with a baptistery and was built on the original site. Classrooms and a kitchen were added to the back of the building in 1969.
