First Baptist Church Gordonville, Texas Gordonville's
First Baptist Church was organized June 1879 with fifteen charter
members. The church was organized by J. B. Pruett, M. H. Hale
and D. B. Brown. A delegation from the Shiloh Baptist Church
at Cedar Mills helped to organize the church. The first pastor was J.
W. Pruett.
Church members were: D. B. Brown, Mr. & Mrs. V. L. Davis, Mr & Mrs J. R. Findley, Mr. & Mrs. _. R. Findley, M. G. hale, G. H. Hawkins, Caroline Hodges, Mary Hodges, J. B. Pruett, J. W. Pruett, and H. H. Samsell. In 1879, there were two buildings in Gordonville - a Trading Post and a Cemetery Building. The church used the Cemetery Building until 1895. A lot was purchased in 1893 from B. F. Carter and C. C. Osborne for $33. Construction of the building was begun in early 1894 and completed in December 1894. The new building was a plain one-room, unpainted structure. The new building was dedicated the first Sunday in March 1895. W. T. Miller was pastor at the time of the dedication. The seating for the church was made from "plunks" produced at the Cedar Mills Sawmill. Mr. D. Ball built the seats free of charge. Logs used for the seats were cut from oak timber and dragged to the building by mules. They were pegged together and plunk backs were attached. The first Sunday School was organized in 1896 and disbanded in 1898. The first church organ was purchased from Sears Roebuck Co. on December 24, 1899 for $43.50. The first church in 1894 was a "Landmark Baptist Church" with a strict disciplinary system. Committees were formed for the purpose of "waiting upon" member for such offenses ranging from unchristian attitude, non-attendance, profane language, failure to appear, conduct, drinking and dancing. Under this influence the church showed little progress and only became an effective witness after the 1910 vote to become a "Missionary Baptist Church". The second building was completed in 1909. It was an oblong structure which was used by the Church and the School which had burned on December 21, 1909. The pastor was B. B. Durham. This building was torn down and parts of it were used to construct a new building in 1922. The new structure was a square building with the southeast corner insert for a porch. The pastor was O. W. Stewart. A new building program began in 1955. Bruce Cushman was pastor. It was made of white brick and included an auditorium, choir, and class rooms. The brick building was converted into an educational wing in 1976 when another church building was constructed. The 1976 structure consisted of an auditorium, kitchen, fellowship hall, offices, restrooms, class rooms and choir. the paster was Rev. Charles Davis. On July 8, 1979 the Gordonville First Baptist church celebrated 100 years of service to the community. One notable member was Henry M. Godwin who served the church as clerk for 36 years. During the war years, Mr. Godwin had the total burden of the Church when a pastor was not available and while the other men were in the service. Church records from 1915 through 1970 were lost. John D. Craft, Jr., pastor researched many records to record the history of the church. Ministers who served the Gordonville First Baptist Church are:
