Church of Christ Whitewright, Texas The Church of Christ in
Whitewright, Texas was established soon after the city of Whitewright
was established in 1878. Its first building was carpeted in red and located on Main Street
and used as a community church. The church bell was donated
by William Whitewright for whom the town was named.
A few years later there was a division in the religious beliefs - the trouble being the use of instrumental music in the church services. Those who preferred to continue to use the organ in the church services pulled away and formed The Christian Church. The second church building for the Church of Christ was built around 1890 on the corner of Chapman and Locust Streets, which was located in the northwest part of the town. A brick building was built in 1922 and used until 1971. In 1971 a modern traditional church building was built on South Carter Street. It has an auditorium that seats 310, nine class rooms, a nursery and a preacher's study. This church was also carpeted in red as was their first church building of the 1800s. The church elders were R.D. Maddux, Houston Darwin, and J.A. Harper, Jr.; the deacons were William J. Billner, Byron Neathery, and David Defratur. The minister, William H. Baker, Jr., came to the congregation in 1969 from Wilburton, Oklahoma. Built in 1971 South Carter St. Sources: The History of Grayson County Texas by Grayson County Frontier Village, 1979, pg797 George J. German.
