Houston Street Church of Christ
Sherman, Texas

In the early 1850s, the Sherman Church existed in Sherman, Texas.  During the post Civil War years, the congregation met in downtown buildings.

The first building was erected at the corner of Houston and Montgomery Streets.  The wooden building had a steeple and
a bell. The building's interior was divided by a rail with men and boys sitting on one side and women and girls sitting on
the opposite side.  There were approximately forty-five members.  The church building was paid in full prior to holding services.

Ministers of the Houston Street Church of Christ included:
  • T. W. Caskey
  • W. C. Dimmitt
  • O. A. Carr
  • J. R. Lucus
  • Harry H. Hamilton
  • "Weeping" Joe Harding
  • W. F. Fulgham
  • J. H. Lawson
  • Jesse P. Sewell
  • A. B. Barret
  • R. D. Smith

The original wooden building at the corner of Houston and Montgomery existed until the 1920s.  It moved into a new building erected on the corner of Walnut Street and Cherry; this building was used by the congregation until 1963.
The second structure was made of clapboard and had gorgeous stained-glass windows.  At that time the Walnut Street congregation moved to South Travis Street and the church became known as Travis Street Church of Christ.

Ministers included:
  • Foy Wallace
  • Elbert Cochran
  • R. C. Bell
  • L. S. White

This building stood until being destroyed by fire in 1999.  For many years, it was the home of Locke the Tinner and, later, The Shirt Shack.

The joint efforts of Travis Street Church of Christ and Grand Avenue Church of Christ led to the organization of Wood Street Church of Christ about 1955; the new congregation was made up of about 125 members from Walnut Street Church of Christ and 50 from Grand Avenue Church of Christ; the new church was located in the northwest part of Sherman.
