Walnut Street Church of Christ Sherman, Texas In
the early 1850s, the Sherman Church existed in Sherman, Texas. During
the post Civil War years, the congregation met in downtown buildings. The first building was erected at the corner of Houston and Montgomery Streets. The second building stood until being destroyed by fire in 1999. The Montgomery Street Church of Christ prospered and grew to approximately five hundred members. In 1920, a new building was erected at the corner of Walnut and Cherry Streets. In 1947, the Walnut St. Church of Christ had prospered and made plans to 'grow the church' by establishing two more congregations. Due to a shortage of building supplies following World War II, an Army barracks at Camp Howze in Gainesville was purchased and moved to 619 N. Grand Ave. The barracks was remolded and services were begun. Ministers of the Grand Ave. Church of Christ included Robert Bankes Claude McQuiddy Mickey Blake Jack Exum Allen Harper Jim Rucker Don Tarbet Jim Reeves Churches Susan Hawkins © 2024 If you find any of Grayson CountyTXGenWeb links inoperable, please send me a message. |
