Grand Ave. Church of Christ Sherman, Texas In
the early 1850s, the Sherman Church existed in Sherman, Texas. During
the post Civil War years, the congregation met in downtown buildings. The first building was erected at the corner of Houston and Montgomery Streets. The second building stood until being destroyed by fire in 1999. The Montgomery Street Church of Christ prospered and grew to approximately five hundred members. In 1920, a new building was erected at the corner of Walnut and Cherry Streets. In 1938, R. N. Hogan and John S. Winston held a tent-revival which resulted in thirty baptisms. Bro. Winston was the first minister of the Music St. Church of Christ which met in a house. In 1945, with help from the Walnut St. Church of Christ, a rock building was erected on Music Street and the congregation was known as the Music St. Church of Christ. At the time of this writing, the rock building still stood but was home to another religious body, As the Music St. membership grew, the elders of the church began looking for a new location. They decided on the old Walnut St. church building which had stood vacant for several years. With Bro. Brown as their minister, they became the Central Church of Christ. The group moved to its present building in 1981 and is now know as the Grand Ave. Church of Christ.
