Central Presbyterian Church Sherman, Texas Sherman Democrat
Sunday, August 13, 1939 OLD HOMESTEAD BEING USED FOR SUNDAY SCHOOL When the Central Presbyterian Church was built in 1896, the structure was large enough to care for the congregation and Sunday school classes, but not for long. Within 25 years the church membership rolls had outgrown the facilities and it became necessary either to construct a wing to the church or to provide an annex. The church elected to purchase the old Edwin Moore homestead on the lot north of the church and alter the rooms for use by the Sunday School. That house was purchased in 1919 along with a lot behind the church. The lot now is used for a parking lot for members of the congregation, and the house cares for all of the Sunday School classes of the church, with the exception of the men's Bible Class, which meets in the church auditorium. The house was built in 1883 by Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Moore. They had lived at the same place for 10 or 12 years prior to the construction of their new home, their original home having been destroyed by fire. Mr. Moore was a merchant, operating a general merchandise store on the west side of the plaza and later erected a building on the south side, into which he moved. He later became a real estate dealer, operating an agency in Sherman at the time of his death. His wife was a daughter of Colonel and Mrs. T.J. Shannon, pioneer settlers of Grayson County. Mr. Moore had moved to Texas from Missouri when but 7 years old. Mrs. Zelma Schwartz of Houston is the only surviving child. Mrs. Moore died in 1917 and Mr. Moore died in 1918. The heirs sold the property to the church. Churches Susan Hawkins © 2024 If you find any of Grayson CountyTXGenWeb links inoperable, please send me a message. |
