October 22, 1964 pg. 1 BAPTIST CHURCH HAS BIRTHDAY This coming Sunday the First Baptist Church of Howe will be 85 years old. The church conducted her first service on October 25th, 1879. W.P. Blake was elected the first clerk and Elder B.J. Smith, who became the first pastor of the church in November, was the moderator pro tem. At the November conference the church voted to receive into the church C.L. Plemmons, its first ordained deacon. In 1883 the first building was completed at a cost of $519.16. On January 1, 1940 the church voted to meet full time and has been full time ever since. The present church building was dedicated on December 4, 1955. The property and buildings are valued at $90,000. The total membership is 550. Total gifts this past church year exceeded $20,000. Claude Cone has been pastor since January 1st of this year. The church is striving for 200 in Sunday School this Sunday. This would give the church an average of 200 for the month of October. The 200 average for a month has never been accomplished in the 85 year history of the church. All members are urged to be in Sunday School at 10:00 a.m. Sunday. Visitors are extended a warm welcome.
