First Presbyterian Church Sherman, Texas The Sherman Courier Wednesday, August 15, 1917 pg. 7 Fiftieth Anniversary Edition A GREAT AND GOOD MAN In the course of her history, Sherman has had many able and good ministers but she has probably never had one who was more popular or generally beloved than Dr. John S. Moore, who for nearly 25 years had charge of the First Presbyterian Church of this city. Dr. Moore came to Sherman in 1879 and worked continuously among thus people until his death which occurred on September 17, 1903. Dr. Moore was one of those characters who was "in the world," but not "of the world" and yet he was. HIs work was not only amongst the members of his own church but with all, and for all. He was one of the men who fought the saloon the hardest during his time, and yet when his funeral was held the saloons in Sherman along with other business houses closed their doors out of respect to his memory. The great work done by Dr. Moore and other grand and noble characters of days gone by is reflected in the splendid citizenship of Sherman and Grayson county of today and the lives of these men should be emulated by us who now labor in the vineyard as well as by those who will come after us. We present herewith a picture of Dr. Moore in order that the many yet here who knew and loved him so well may again see the once familiar face now gone.
