First Presbyterian Church Sherman, Texas The Sherman Courier Wednesday, August 15, 1917 pg. 3 UNION SERVICE SUNDAY EVENING Held at First Presbyterian Church. Dr. Crane Preaches to a Large Congregation There was a large attendance at the First Presbyterian Church Sunday evening, where union services were held by the Presbyterian, Methodist and Christian churches. Dr. Jas. A. Crain, who will be chaplain of the First Regiment of Field Artillery, preached from the text, "Is the Young Man Absolom Safe?" Dr. Crain said that this was a great question - the great question - "Is the Young Man Safe?" Thousands will be asking this question through the days to come and their hearts will be wrung with anxiety while they wait for the answer. The government is looking after the young man's safety in large degree, but there are other organizations that are interested and doing all possible to conserve his manhood, his health and his morals. Among the agencies are the churches and the Y.M.C.A., working hand in hand for the safeguarding in every way possible of the young men from evil influences. Dr. Crain urged that the churches look closely after the young men going from their congregations and try to keep in touch with them by letters. That there should be information on the work of the church and many letters written, for these would all have a tendency to keep the absent ones from being gloomy and from seeking recreation of the wrong sort. Dr. Crain said that in many of the regimental headquarters there had been phonographs and a lot of records purchased and put in charge of the chaplain for the benefit of the soldiers. A movement is under way to give each soldier from this section a New Testament and funds are being provided for this purpose. Dr. Wharton was asked to appoint a committee to look after this work. It is believed that a movement to raise money for a phonograph and records would meet with a ready response here.
