First Congregational Church Denison, Texas If
we assume that the building stood for 50 years, city directories tell
us that it housed churches for less than half its life. In 1909 the
Congregational Church and the German Lutheran Church are both listed at
117 N. Tone Avenue. No church is listed there in 1911. The last church
listed at that location was the Nonprogressive Christian Church in
1913, at 115 N. Tone Avenue. The 1914 Sanborn fire map, however, still
showed the building occupied by the Congregational Church as late as
May of that year. The 117 N. Tone Avenue address was apparently changed
to 115 sometime between 1909 and 1913.
Announcements of Sunday church services in the Denison Daily Herald in late 1906 through early 1907 show that the Congregational Church and the German Lutheran Church conducted their services at the same times. Query: how were they were able to do that while sharing a building? Note on the maps that sometime between 1897 and 1903 a house was built north of the church on the corner of Tone and Woodard. Before then the church's location was described as "the SW corner of Woodard and Tone. " After 1903 it was no longer "on the corner." The 1930 map shows that the building had been converted to a dwelling with a frame porch added to the front.
