BUILDING NEWS

New Baptist Church - except for some detailed revision in initial plans, this architect's drawing depicts the magnificent
church to be erected by the First Baptist Church on the site of its present building, corner of Woodard and Mirick.
Dismantling the old structure is expected to start by the middle of September.

GRANT PERMIT FOR NEW BAPTIST CHURCH;
RAZING OLD BUILDING TO START SEPT. 15

The First Baptist Church application for a $200,000 building permit to construct a new church on the site of the present one at 401 West Woodard was officially approved last week by Ernest Maugh, city building inspector, thus paving the way for the start of dismantling on the present building by September 15.
The permit was originally applied for by L.M. Newsom, church buildin chairman, last May but a zoning ordinance amendment placing the church in a commercial district was necessary before the permit could be approved.
According to Mr. Newsom the church architect will present final plans within the next 30 days, and dismantling should start by Sept. 15 at the latest.  Construction of the new church will get underway as soon as a site has been cleared.
On the basis of present plans, the new church will be night landmark by reason of an 85-foot tower on the southeast corner which will be illuminated at night by indirect floodlights and an 11-foot lantern.  The two-story brick building, 55 by 141 feet, will face east to west, with a slab tower on the east side in which will be housed the pastor's study.
Total capacity of the first floor will be...persons, while the balcony will accomodate 200 persons, and the choir loft behind the pulpit, 50 persons.  The auditorium, 50 by 95 feet, will run east and west, with the pulpit flanked by the piano and organ, on the east.  The choir offices and storage facilities will be at the far west of the church.
The classrooms, a...., 36 by...feet. a kitchen, a mechanical room and rest rooms will be located on the basement floor.  The...will run east to west under the auditorium, with a stage, 12 by 30 feet, on the east and dressing rooms behind the stage.
The secretary's and associate pastor's offices will be located on the second floor of the west section of the building.  The baptistry will be on the balcony level of the west section with a woman's and man's dressing rooms on either side.  The organ room will be over the women's dressing room.  A parlor, 12 bt 36 feet,  will be located on the second floor of the west section.

Editor's Note: The architect's drawing in the photograph above is the church building that was built in 1957 - a seemingly 9-year delay between this article and the building of the new edifice in 1957.
