First Baptist Church Denison, Texas The Sunday Gazetteer Sunday, July 22, 1900 REMINISCENCES Week Ending July 24, 1880 - The Baptist church of this city sent a remarkable petition to the Texas Baptist Association. It was an appeal for a new pastor. The petition says, "Our church has steadily declined for some time, some have moved away, others are lukewarm, and we find ourselves in a deplorable condition. We have only a few members, our prayer meetings are a failure, Sabbath school almost borken. Only 2 or 3 members attended the last conference. Our courage has lagged, our purses are empty, we cannot sustain a preacher, and infidelity abounds." This was a sorry plight indeed....
