October 13, 1936 Six Men Jailed in Mystery Death Special to the News. Sherman, Tex., Oct.12 - Grayson and Cooke County officers Monday were holding six men in connection with the mysterious slaying of Fred Noles, 65 , of Tioga, found shot to death Saturday night on his farm west of Tioga. The farm is just inside the Cooke County line close to the Junction of Grayson , Cooke and Denton counties. Deputy Sheriff John Evridge of Grayson County said he believed Noles was slain by members of a liquor ring thought to be operating near Tioga. He said it was possible Noles was shot because of his probably knowledge of the gang's operations. Four of the men arrested were being held in the Cooke County jail at Gainesville and two were being held here. Charges of possession of nontax paid whiskey were filed in Cooke County Court Monday against three of the men, it was reported from Gainesville. Funeral services for Noles were held Monday. Dallas Morning News October 17, 1936 Tioga Farmer Placed in Jail After Slaying Gainesville, Texas - Oct 16- Claud Kennedy , 40, Tioga Farmer, remained in the Cooke County Jail Friday night, charged with murder in a complaint filed in Justice Court, after one effort to obtain his release on bond failed. Kennedy, was charged with slaying Fred Noles, 65, of Tioga Saturday. Sheriff Luther McCollum set Kennedy's appearance bond for grand jury investigation at $2,000 and paper were prepared but one of the bondsmen withdrew bail finally was approved. Dallas Morning News February 28, 1938 Three Men Quizzed in Murder Investigation Gainesville, Texas, Feb 27- Three men are in the Cooke County Jail for questioning in connection with the weird story of one of them, accusing the other two with a murder in Cooke County in the last eighteen months. Sheriff Luther McCullum took into custody one of the men who was living in a dugout near Terrell. He had been advised by the Sheriff at Tyler that the man said his two brothers-in-law had committed the murder. Then the brothers were arrested south of Tyler by Sheriff McCollum. The accuser said he was threatened with a knife if he said anything of the murder which he maintains the brothers committed in a holdup which yielded several dollars. The Sheriff's department is working on two unsolved murders, Fred Noles, 65 of Tioga was found shot to death on his farm in Southeast Cooke County near the Grayson County line Oct. 10, 1936. There was no evidence of robbery. Earl G. Kerr, postmaster at Woodbine, was found shot to death near his store on Dec. 22, 1936. His empty purse was found by a railroad section worker several days later some distance from the scene.
