Sunday, November 24, 1901 pg. 1 A TERRIBLE ACCIDENT David D. Wright, who has been connected with the Katy machine shops for the past 20 years, met with an accident Wednesday noon which cost him his life. Mr. Wright while en route home saw that he could make a short cut by crossing over cars which stood on the new switches. He was standing between 2 cars and was in the act of mounting the bumpers. A string of cars were kicked down by an engine and struck with violent force the car nearest to Mr. Wright, knocking him under the wheels. Four cars passed over his person, crushing his legs almost to a pulp. He was removed to the surgeon's office of the M.K. & T., where both legs were amputated by Drs. Acheson and Birch. Mr. Wright was regarded as an expert in his department at the Katy. About 2 years ago he left the shops and went to west Texas to engage in sheep raising, but the life was not congenial and he returned to Denison and resumed his old "sit" at the shops. He has a wife and 2 boys. One of his sons, Clarence, is at Harvard University, and the other, Irving, is an electrician at Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Wright was a prominent member of the North Methodist church. He was a G.A.R. and a member of the A.O.U.W. Mr. Wright was over 60 years of age. He was highly esteemed, which was attested by the large throng of his fellow workmen which was present at the office of Drs. Acheson and Birch after he was removed there. Mr. Wright died about 5:30 Thursday morning. He was sensible a few minutes after the operation and recognized friends present. The remains will be held for interment until the arrival of his son from Cleveland, Ohio. The interment will be at Fairview cemetery. He will be buried under the auspices of the above orders.
