Sunday, November 22, 1908 pg. 3 J.H. PORTER DEAD J.H. Porter, a pioneer businessman of Denison, was found dead in bed at his room in the Lebrecht building on Main street Saturday morning at an early hour. Mr. Porter sustained a fall a few days ago and had been confined to his room. He had been going on crutches for the past two months owing to rheumatism. Mr. Porter came to Denison soon after his brother, Tobias, about 30 years ago. He was in the pioneer days a very active business man. He was ranked as one of the best grocery men in the southwest. This was the verdict of traveling men. J.H. Porter was a noble and generous hearted man. Many a family in Denison were objects of his charity. He was a liberal giver and when his means permitted, never turned a deaf ear to a cry of distress. Fifteen years ago he conducted a very large grocery business. For the past 20 years he was associated in business with his brother, Tobias. The firm was one of the old landmarks, but like many others death has almost swept them from public memory. He leaves a wife and 3 children. The funeral took place Sunday from the home of his son-in-law, Dr. Henry Walker. The interment was at Fairview. Mr. Porter was about 60 years of age.
