Friday, June 12, 1942 pg. 1 John W. Estes, 68, retired Katy brakeman and recently manager of the Hibdon watch shop, succumbed to a heart attack at 1:45 a.m. today at the Katy hospital where he had been entered for treatment. He entered the institution ten days ago. Funeral services were held Saturday from Short-Murray chapel with interment at Fairview, Short-Murray directing. Rev. J.E. Spivey officiated at the funeral. Mr. Estes was born in Lebanon, Tennessee, May 7, 1874 and was reared and educated in that state, coming to Denison in 1900 and accepted work with the Katy September 4, 1900 as passenger brakeman. On October 5, 1911 he was promoted to conductor and a few years later relinquished his rights as conductor and continued in the capacity of brakeman. He retired May 1, 1934 from active service due to ill health. For several years he was employed at the Short-Murray funeral home as agent for the Gate City Funeral Insurance company. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. Surviving are two sons, George of Dallas and Jack of San Antonio; a brother, Ben, also survives.
