Paul Verkin, 74, 320 W. Hull street, died Friday morning at 11:55 a.m. after a lengthy illness lasting over a period of 7 years. Mr. Verkin was a retired commercial photographer.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Paul Verkin; and 4 sons, Melvin Verkin, Paul Verkin Jr., and Lewis M. Verkin of Galveston; and George T. Verkin of Denison.
Mr. Verkin was born in Berlin, Germany and came to New York City at the age of 10 with his widowed mother, and a brother, and was reared and educated in New York City. He studied photography as a youth, and worked as a photographer for many years in New York, accepting an offer to come to Austin, Texas.
Later he worked in San Antonio and arrive in Denison in 1885, purchasing the Miller Studio in the 100 block of Main street, which he operated until 1905. He then entered the life insurance business, working in Denison and the Indian Territory. Later Mr. Verkin went to Galveston and stayed in the insurance business until 1927, when he returned to Denison and later retired.
Funeral services are pending at the Short-Murray funeral home, until the arrival of his sons from Galveston.

FORMER DENISON RESIDENT DIES AT GALVESTON THURSDAY
Mrs. Lillie Verkin, 70-year-old former resident of Denison, died late Thursday at her home in Galveston, following an illness of several years.
She was born Lillie Evans, at Alton, Illinois, February 6, 186 and came to Denison with her parents at the age of 12 and received her education in the Denison Public schools. She married Paul Verkin, a local photographer. A short time after her husband's death, she moved to Galveston, residing with her sons.
She was a member of the Calvary Baptist church and is survived by 4 sons: Melvin, Rowland, Louis and George, all of Galveston; a brother, Oscar Scales of Galveston; and 5 sisters, Mrs. Ruby Bauerfield, Mrs. Lula Walker and Mrs. Georgia Pace, all of Denison; Mrs. Nellie Hardin and Mrs. Maude Jennings of Fort Worth.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Short-Murray chapel with Rev. L. R. Lamb, pastor of the Calvary Baptist church, officiating. Interment will be at Fairview cemetery with Short-Murray directing.
