- Retired Colonel Leonard Abramowitz, 78-year-old Denison resident,
died Tuesday Oct. 19, 1999, at Texoma Medical Center.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, in Fairview Cemetery in Denison with Rabbi Harold Caminker officiating. Col. Abramowitz was born on Dec. 12, 1920, in Canton, Mass., the son of Harry and Rose Abramowitz. He attended Franklin Union Institute. He married Jamesene Wigzell on Dec. 3, 1943, in Denison, Texas. He enlisted in the Army Air-Corps in 1942. His flying career began at Jones Field in Bonham. He received his wings at Eagle Pass, Texas and was a pilot instructor at Perrin Air Force Base in Denison. His overseas tours were in Europe and Japan. He received the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, Purple Heart, Prisoner of War Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Distinguished Unit Citation with Oak Leaf Cluster and Air Force Reserve Medal. He served in the training of the Japanese self defense force, and the Strategic Air Command U-2 wing. He retired from active duty in 1966, as colonel. He was a member of the Beth-Emeth Temple in Sherman. He was a lifetime member of the American Ex-Pow's, North Texas Chapter, Lone Star Masonic Lodge AF&AM, Scottish Rite, Consistory Hella Temple and North Texas Shrine Club, 2nd Air Force Association and Retired Officers Association. Surviving are his wife, Jamesene Abramowitz of Denison; son, David Abramowitz of Spring, Texas; and grandchildren, Bradley and Darrell Abramowitz of Spring, Texas.
