TEX COVINGTON, EX-BIG LEAGUE PLAYER IS DEAD W, W, (Tex) Covington, 44 years old, a former big league baseball player, died at his home west of Denison on Route No. 4 Thursday morning at 5 o'clock after a lengthy illness of heart disease. In his chosen field of baseball, Mr. Covington, or "Tex" as he was known to many fans, flashed to great heights as a fast-ball pitcher, and before the World war played with Ty Cobb and the Detroit Americans. He had been connected with the American Association and with other groups of big league proportions. It was in Denison that Mr. Covington started out on the path of baseball fame, and it was to this city he returned to play with the Denison team in the Western League after his career in big time baseball. He was a pitcher of exceptional merit, and was a popular favorite with baseball fans here in the days when baseball was the leading sport. Mr. Covington was born in Tennessee, March 19, 1887, the son of Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Covington. He was married to Miss Anna Mitchell in Denison, Aug. 30, 1917. Mr. Covington's most recent employment was with the Katy railroad, on whose baseball team he also was a popular player. Ill health during the last two or three years had kept him close to his home west of Denison. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Anna Covington; two sons, Ray and Ralph Covington; five brothers, T. E. Covington of New Mexico, O. M. and C. C. Covington of Denison, H. H. Covington of Teague, and Bob Covington of Gulf, Texas; and three sisters, Mrs. N. I. Miller, Mrs. B. T. Painter and Mrs. Ralph Wood, all of Denison. Funeral services will be held at the home of his sister, Mrs. Ralph Wood, 1303 West Walker street, Friday afternoon at 4 o'clock with Rev. Homer T. Fort, pastor of Waples Memorial Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery with Short-Murray, funeral directors, in charge. Ralph
Edward Covington, 82, a native of Denison,Tx, died October 29, 2012.
Ralph was born December 31, 1930 to William Wilkes "Tex" Covington
(1887-1931) and Anna Mitchell Covington. He graduated from Denison High
School and Southeastern State College in Durant, Ok. He served in the
United States Navy from 1950 to 1954, during the Korean Conflict. He
was aboard the USS Boxer.
Ralph's father played professions baseball with the Detroit American League Team (Detroit Tigers) in 1911 as pitcher and was roommates with Ty Cobb. Ralph loved baseball and played in high school and in the Navy. Ralph began his training with architect Donald Mayes, in Denison, and Brown and Chapman Architects in Sherman, Tx. Ralph was certified by the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners. He worked with architects Downing Thomas and Grogan and Scoggins in the Dallas area, and was proud to have worked on the SMU Library. After working in Anniston, Alabama, he opened his own office in Denison, doing work for the city, county, and local residents. He worked on many churches in the state of Texas, as well as the Sherman Library and Salvation Army. Survivors include his son, Jay Lowe Covington of Paris, AR, and the Miller Houghton family of Midland, TX. Another son, William (Bill) Edward Covington, passed away on January 22, 2013. Ralph is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Ray Covington. There will be a memorial service in Denison, TX, for both Ralph and Bill Covington this summer. Edward Covington (Bill) of Offenbach, Germany, 52, a native of Denison,
Tx, died January 22, 2013. Bill was born October 30, 1960 to parents
Ralph Edward and Margaret Hampton Covington. He graduated from Denison
High School in 1979 and the Denver Art Institute with a degree in
Graphic Design and Advertising Design in 1983.
Bill had a successful 25-year career starting out at the Dallas Market Center. He left his mark in Germany when his logo was patented and chosen to light up the sky over Frankfurt on the Union Investment skyscraper. He was with Advantage Design, Barry Blau and Partners, Wooderman Cato Johnson, Gordon Waters and Advance Design Center. A few of the campaigns he worked on were Citi Bank Visa, Ford of Germany and Ford Euro, and BASF. As an Art Director, he did conception design, photo direction, corporate identity programs, computer graphics, annual reports, direct advertising/marketing for magazines, brochures, catalogs, and newspapers for an international assortment of clients. Survivors include his companion of 24 years, Romana West of the home, and brother, Jay Covington of Paris, AR. Other survivors include his mother and step-father, Margaret and Jack Wade of Paris, AR, step-sister and step-brother, Dianne Wade Fraser and Mike Wade; his aunt and uncle, Vera Anne and Roland Humphrey; cousins, Sarah and Colin Humphrey and children. Bill was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Edward Covington, October 29, 2012, and niece, Katherine Humphrey Omelak.
