AKERS, LOCAL OPERATOR GROCERY STORE, SUCCUMBS Solomon Akers, 76, operator of a grocery business with his son for the past 18 years, and swell known in the city, died at his home, 417 East Sears street at 10:15 p.m. Wednesday after an illness that has lingered for the past 14 months. Funeral services are announced for Friday afternoon, Rev. S.L. Terry, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, officiating. Mr. Akers was a member of that church. Interment will be at Fairview with Short-Murray directing. Mr. Akers came to Texas from Cass County, Missouri, the place of his birth, in 1865 and settled at Bonham. After remaining there for a short time, they returned to Missouri, to find their home destroyed as a price of the war of the 60s. They returned immediately to Weatherford county where Sol was reared and educated. All of their trips were made in covered wagons. Mr. Akers, through his frugality, became a land owner and prospered as a farmer of that section, and became known for many miles around as one of their leading citizens. He dealt extensively in the ranching and cattle business also. In 1911 he went to Corpus Christi where he conducted a grocery business for 3 years. Moving later to Kingsville he made headquarters there for 4 years where he operated a hotel business. In 1915 he located in Durant and operated a ranch and stock business from that point. In 1918 he decided to come to Denison and open a grocery business with his son, and the present location at 201 West Main has been the location of their business since that time. He was a member of the Masonic order and that organization will have charge of the services at the cemetery. He was born February 14, 1859 in Cass County, Missouri, his parents being Mr. and Mrs. Larkin Akers. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Mary Akers of this city and 2 sons, Carl of Denison and Robert of Perkin, Illinois. Also 4 daughters, Mrs. Maggie Allen, Los Angeles; Mrs. Lile Settles, Pemmona, California; Mrs. Amie Thomas, San Antonio; and Mrs. Lettie Reed, San Antonio. Surviving are also 2 sisters, Mrs. Gordon Show, Weatherford; and Mrs. Julia Barger, Los Crusius, New Mexico; 8 grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. The Denison Press Friday, January 17, 1936 pg. 4 Akers Funeral Held Today with Burial Fairview Cemetery Funeral services were conducted at 2 o'clock from the Short-Murray chapel for Solomon Akers, groceryman here since 1918, who died at his home, 471 E. Sears street Wednesday night. Rev. S.L. Terry, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, of which deceased was a member, officiated. The Masonic order had charge at the grave. Pallbearers were Walter Langston, Will Regensburger, Henry Etter, J.R. Dishner, F.B. Williford, Chas. Harris. Short-Murray directed the funeral. Mary Akers
