Herbert, a lad of 18 years, was switching and, as was his custom, ran ahead of the engine to get on the foot board. He ran into a slanting line from the fireman's side so that the engineer could not see him at all. His foot slipped from the foot board and the fireman, J. D. Lowers, cried to the engineer, J. N. Cherry "My God, Herbert St. John is under the engine." The engine was immediately stopped before it got the length of two crossties and the young man taken from under the wheels, carried over to the shed and laid on a stretcher. The wheels has passed over both legs below the knee. The wounded man was taken to his home and medical attendance summoned. It is feared both legs will have to be amputated.
