Friday, February 12, 1954 pg. 2 Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the First Baptist church for Floyd L. Norton, 92-year-old retired school teacher and resident of Denison for many years, who died at Madonna hospital early Monday morning after a lingering illness. Rev. B.N. Ramsay officiated and interment was in Fairview Cemetery with Bratcher-Moore funeral directors in charge of arrangements. Norton's home was at 900 W. Woodard. He was born in Trenton, Tennessee, October 7, 1861, the son of a Baptist minister, who was also his teacher in a private school for several years. He graduated from Union University in Jackson, Mississippi in 1881 and began his teaching career. He taught in Tennessee, Kentucky and Louisiana before coming to Texas in 1895. He was superintendent of schools for seven years at Rockdale. His first wife, the former Miss Rosa Lee Miles, died in Rockdale. Dr. Norton came to Denison in 1905 and taught in the Harshaw academy. Later he served as school superintendent in Roff, Oklahoma. In August 1908 he was married to Miss Lidia Bell, native Denisonian, who survives him. He returned to Denison in 1910 and taught Latin in the Denison High School for the next 25 years. He retired in 1935. His doctor's degree was an honorary one from Union University in honor of his 52 years of teaching. Dr. Norton was a member of the First Baptist church and had served on the board of deacons at Rockdale and at the First Baptist church here until his age and ill health forced him to retire from active participation. He is survived by his widow; six daughters, Mrs. J.M. Shepperd and Mrs. C.H. Roberts, both of Gilmer; Mrs. R.W. Norton, Shreveport; Mrs. F.A. Shaeffer, Houston; Mrs. R.A. Rank, Fort Worth and Mrs. G.H. Bock of Austin; two sisters, Mrs. F.G. Cadwallader, Denver and Mrs. W.A. Harrell, Temple; 10 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. Richard C.
