Friday, July 17, 1942 pg. 1 CECIL TATE KILLED IN ACCIDENT Rear-View Mirror of Truck Breaks Youth's Neck Friday Cecil Tate, 14-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. O.B. Tate, 610 W. Munson, was killed almost instantly about 9 o'clock this morning in the alley between the 300 blocks West Main and Chestnut streets when an extension arm of a parked ice truck's rear view mirror caught him in the neck as he was passing on a moving milk truck. According to Patrolmen Louis Carlat and Fred Hicks, who investigated the accident, the youth was on the running board of a Barker's dairy truck moving west up the alley and driven by Eugene Schluse, 111 S. Barrett avenue, and approached the parked Southern Ice company truck in charge of L.D. Snow, route 1, Webb City. The rear-view mirror of the ice truck, facing west also, had previously been detached, but the iron extension arm containing a small round knob on the end was left on the vehicle. As the milk truck passed by, the knob caught in the youngster's neck, cutting a deep gash and officers said probably breaking it. An ambulance was called, but the youth was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Long-Sneed hospital. Carlat, who notified Tate's mother of the incident, said she could not at first believe her son was dead. His father is an employee of the city. This was the first traffic fatality within Denison's city limits for this year. Cecil was born May 6, 1928 in Denison, was a member of the Baptist church and Boy Scouts. He attended Houston school 2 years; Central 2 years and the last few years at Peabody. He became a second class scout on February 23 and had been employed by the Barker dairy 2 weeks. Surviving are his parents and 2 brothers, Bobby Glen and Monty Owen Tate of Denison.
