The Sunday Gazeetter
Sunday, March 26, 1911 John Fike Dead J. W. Fike, a pioneer citizen and business man, aged 60 years, died of pneumonia the past week at his home, 521 East Main street. John Fike was a Missourian and cast his lot with this city about twenty-five years ago. He was by profession a contractor and for some time connected with the city work. He was a gallant soldier of the Confederacy and wore the grey until after the close of the war. The local camp of Confederate Veterans conducted the funeral services Sunday afternoon. John Fike was a man of very strong convictions. When he believed a thing was right he stuck to it, never mind how great the crowd was against him. The city editor will hold John Fike in grateful remembrance. We never met him that he did not hold out his hand for a shake and a kind word. We have seen the time when John was a kind, advising friend. He was bluff and out-spoken, but he had a kind heart. Besides a wife, the following children who survive were present at the time of his death: Mrs. Llewellen Hayes, Mrs. Sallie Smith, Mrs. Mamie Dodd, John Fike Jr, and Nelson Fike. Mrs. Eli Burkhalter, a sister of Kansas City was also present when the end came. The interment was at Maple Grove cemetery and was well attended. A good man sleeps there.
