Rites Here Today
For Early Teacher Miss Inez Cartwright, ,90, a Denison High School teacher for nearly a half century, died Wednesday at noon in Shreveport, La., where she had made her home with a sister since leaving Denison about a year ago. Funeral services were held at the Bratcher-Moore chapel here this afternoon at 4 o'clock with Rev. Ed Bayless, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery. Miss Cartwright was born at Paducah, Ky., Nov. 9, 1863, and received her schooling in Missouri where she went with her family as a child. Coming to Denison as a young woman just out of college, Miss Cartwright first taught in the now abandoned Stephens elementary school for a few years before transferring to the high school. Miss Cartwright specialized in history and taught this subject at the high school from about the turn of the century until her retirement in 1936. Her long association with the high school made her one of the faculty stalwarts of that institution. She was sponsor of the junior class for many years. Miss Cartwright was active in women's club work and was a life member of the XXI Club. Her home for many years was at 1211 West Bond, which only recently was sold after her departure from Denison. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church. The sister at Shreveport, Mrs. W. L. Carter, and a niece there are the only surviving relatives.
