Saturday, September 12, 1936 pg 1 FAREWELL PARTY TO EMPLOYES BY STAND OPERATOR IS TRAGIC Jim Muncie, Willie Mae Lollar and Anna Louise Hogg Die from Wounds After Truck Turns End Over End Near Denison A farewell party for employes of the White Pig stand early this morning ended disastrously when three were killed and ten hurt, eight seriously after the truck in which they were riding turned over several times on Highway 75 near Calvary cemetery 2 miles north of Denison. Willie Mae Lollar, 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Lollar, 926 West Morton street, Jim Muncie, 19-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Muncie, 412 West Texas street, and Anna Louise Hogg, 18-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Hogg, 923 West Nelson street, received fatal injuries. Miss Lollar died at the City hospital at 3 a.m., Muncie at the City hospital at 6 a.m., and Miss Hogg at 1:08 p.m. at the Long-Sneed hospital. All were mangled, almost beyond recognition. Mrs. Ruth Thompson, owner of the stand recently sold, and who gave the farewell party for her employes, is in the city hospital with injuries believed to be fatal. "Sonny", son of Mrs. Thompson, is also in the city hospital with serious injuries. Leland Miller and Tilman (Red) Woodby are both in the city hospital suffering from broken bones and internal injuries. Clara Simmons, Pauline Mayes and Mrs. Bessie Hayes, aunt of Mrs. Thompson, and Edith Vinson are in the hospital with serious injuries. DRIVER ESCAPES Alfred Overturf, said to have been driving the truck, a light model, was shaken from the crash and Pauline Farmer, employe of the stand, was cut and bruised. They were given attention and released from the hospital. The tragedy occurred near the Catholic cemetery, two miles outside of Denison. The cause of the tragedy was not given by city police who made an investigation, although they believe some mechanical trouble developed that turned the car over several times said to have been end over end. Whether the car was traveling at a high rate of speed or not was not ascertained by police this morning. The exact time of the tragedy is not known, but reports were first received by city police at 2:15 when the Short-Murray undertaking establishment notified them after a passerby at the wreck had reported it. Two ambulances from the place, a police car and several individual vehicles were rushed to the scene and the injured persons brought to the hospital. Police said the accident was the worst in the history of the city as far as they could learn. Another one occurring on highway 75 between Denison and Sherman when one was killed and eleven hurt, several years ago, at that time considered the worse. A taxi driver was shaken up and bruised as he returned from the scene after driving there to assist. His car turned over and was badly damaged. Police were trying to determine the cause of the wreck this morning, but had only learned that the machine was driving with two wheels off the concrete when the tragedy occurred. The truck was badly damaged and one report said a wheel came off and resulted in the catastrophe. Clara Simmons, 17, is suffering from head injuries and possible concussion of the brain, but hospital attendants said her condition was satisfactory and her pulse had a regular beat. She has more than an even chance of recovery. Overturf, driver, was treated at the clinic for external injuries and released. He asked for a physician to call this morning to give additional first aid. He is not seriously hurt. According to stories told by Miss Vinson and Miss Farmer, least injured of the thirteen, they were riding along enroute to Red River Inn, where they intended to hold their party when the car, traveling about forty miles an hour, started to wobble. Miss Vinson was thrown from the machine about twenty feet and Miss Farmer, riding next to the cab, was thrown out. Both girls said that Overturf was driving and Miss Vinson, Woodby and Sonny Thompson were riding in the cab. Miss Vinson and Miss Farmer said they did not know what happened after the car started to wobble. The Thompson child lost two toes on one foot from the crash that completely demolished the truck. Funeral services for Muncie will be held Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock from the Calvary Baptist church, Rev. L. R. Lamb officiating. Short-Murray undertakers will be in charge of arrangements, with interment at Fairview cemetery. He was reared and educated in Denison, graduating in 1935. later attending Texas University, majoring in mechanical engineering. He was arranging to leave again for school next week. He was a member of the DeMolays and the Calvary Baptist church. He had lived here all his life. Services for Miss Lollar will be held from the Short-Murray chapel Monday at 10 a.m., with Rev. S. L. Terry of the First Presbyterian church officiating, assisted by Rev. J. F. Murrell of the First Baptist church. Interment will be made at Fairview cemetery with Short-Murray directing.
