Thursday, November 30, 2000 Funeral services for Dr. Rene G. Gerard, 82, of Denison. will be held today (Nov. 30) at 10:30 a.m. at Bratcher Chapel with the Rev. Sam Caldwell officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Bratcher Funeral Home of Denison. Dr. Gerard died Monday, Nov. 27, in Denison. Pallbearers will be B. J. Smith, D. J. Smith, Marquis Gerard, Terry Gerard, Mark Martin and Bill Smith. Dr. Gerard was born May 28, 1918 in Ninnekah, Okla, the son of Gabriel R. and Rhoda Gerard. He and Eva Knox were married Aug. 5, 1950 in Madill, Okla. He was a graduate of Oklahoma University and joined the Army, by request, in 1943. He was in combat at Leyte and Luzon in the Pacific, and after the war was stationed in Japan. In 1950 he joined the staff of Madonna Hospital, and in 1952 was appointed assistant division surgeon for the MK&T Railroad. Dr. Gerard was president of Grayson County Medical Society in 1956 and an associate of the late U.S. Rep. Ray Roberts. Dr. Gerard served on the Golden Rule school board, helped organize the local Boy's Club, worked with the Optimist and Soroptimist clubs to found the Denison Girl's Club, served on the city council, was twice named chief of staff at Madonna Hospital, was a member of the Texoman Medical Center staff from 1965 until 1990 and was named chief of the OB/GYN division in 1967, and was a charter member of the American Medical Association and a life member of the Texas Medical Association. Survivors are his wife, Eva, of Denison; two sons, Dr. Terry Gerard of Tulsa, Okla; and Gabriel Gerard of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two daughters, Michelle Smith and Yvette Gerard, both of Denison and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, John Gregory Gerard in 1981; a granddaughter, Richelle Smith in 1979; his parents, two brothers and one sister.
