Flo Daugherty was born November 1, 1923, in Grandfield, Oklahoma, to
parents James and Edna (Downs) Gibbons. Flo passed from this life
on August 10, 2020, at the age of 96. She grew up and attended
school in Grandfield. Like most families in “The Greatest Generation”,
the Gibbons life was a hard-scrabble one, and Flo did a lot of the
housework and cooking. Early on, she showed a wonderful talent
for sewing, and she began making her own clothes, and the clothes for
her much loved brothers. After her 11th grade, she met the
love of her life, R. J. Daugherty, and they began dating. She and
R. J. eloped during her senior year of school, beginning what was to be
a relationship which lasted until his death in 1986.
Flo was an amazing seamstress, producing countless pieces of clothing, pillows, quilts and wedding dresses, She worked many years with her daughter Anna in their shop designing and sewing draperies for individual homes and businesses. Flo loved playing games, and the family enjoyed many hours playing dominoes, Yatzee, and other games. She was a formidable opponent, and a priceless partner. Flo also had a passion for current events and kept up with what was going on in the world as long as she could. When she began to lose her eye sight due to macular degeneration, she listened to recorded books, the subjects often biographies of people like Franklin Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton. Flo's main priority was being a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. Hers was a life well-lived. Flo was preceded in death by her parents, her husband R. J. Daugherty, brothers Jimmy, Cleo, Tommy, and Adolphus “Doc” Gibbons, a great-grandchild, Clarity Watterson and great-great grandson Kevin Richardson.
