Sunday, November 1, 1891 MORTUARY Tuesday morning at 5 o'clock, after an illness of over five weeks, Mr. John Haven quietly passed into that sleep that knows no awakening. The news of his death was not wholly unexpected, although his serious illness was generally known. Mr. Haven came to Denison from New Orleans, many years ago, and for a long time engaged in the retail grocery trade. His business was successful in as much as its accumulated profit placed him among the heavier tax payers of this city. He sold his grocery business three years ago, since which time he has been looking after his farm and city property and attending the duties of county commissioner for Precinct No. 2, to which office he was chosen last fall. Both as a private and a public citizen the life and character of John Haven is above reproach. He was honest, conscientious and straightforward in all his dealings, and his death was fully in keeping with his life. Mr. Haven was born and raised a Roman Catholic, but of late years he had become convinced that all religions were of human origin, and that if there was a future life no one had any reliable knowledge in regard to it. Nearly his last words were that he knew his career was soon to close, and that he did not want any clergyman or priest to conduct the funeral ceremonies. He asked to be buried by the Knights of Pythias, of which order he was a worthy member, in their lot in the cemetery, and his request was strictly complied with. The funeral took place Wednesday evening. The Knights attended in full uniform, and the cortege which followed the remains to the grave was imposing, there being some seventy-five or eighty carriages in the procession. Sunday Gazetteer
