Mark A. Ayres 1842 - 1914 The Whitewright Sun
Friday, October 23, 1914 pg. 1 ANOTHER PIONEER PASSES ON Record of the death of another pioneer citizen of this community is made this week. Mark A. Ayres, after a long season of suffering, came to the end of life's journey at an early hour Saturday morning. About a year ago Mr. Ayres suffered a stroke of paralysis, followed by several recurring visitations of that malady. He was able to come to town in June of this year, but since that time was confined at home, and for the past three months had been in a serious condition, and it was seen that life's tide was ebbing. Fortunately he lived among friends, true friends who systematically and tenderly looked after him during the closing chapter of his long life. The deceased was born in Saline county, Missouri, May 23, 1842. He came to Texas fifty odd years ago while the war was raging between the states. Settling on a farm four miles north of this place, he met a fair measure of success and never changed his residence. He is survived by his widow and three sons, T.W. Ayres of Trenton; Tobe, who resides at present at the parental home; and Jim, who lives in the community north of town. The funeral at the home Sunday afternoon was attended by a large concourse of people, numbering among them the decedent's many friends of Whitewright, Trenton, Bells, Sherman, and other places. Rev. Fender, assisted by Dr. Fleming, conducted the funeral services, following which the body was given burial at the old Everheart cemetery. Mary K. Ayres 24 April 1846 - 25 July 1934 Trenton, Texas
Friday, August 3, 1934 Funeral Services for Mrs. Mary K. Ayres, mother of T.W. Ayres of Trenton, were held at the family home three miles northwest of Whitewright, Thursday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, July 26, by Rev. J.F. Fender of Whitewright, assisted by Rev. E.B. Jackson of Trenton. Glen Earnheart of Trenton had charge of the arrangements. Burial was at Everheart cemetery. A number of friends from Trenton attended the services. Mrs. Ayres was born April 24, 1846, in Green County, Kentucky. She came to Texas with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Batsell, pioneer settlers of this section. Her parents, with others, formed a wagon train and came to Texas about 80 years ago. Their first Texas home was west of Bells, where they resided for one year. They then moved to the community northwest of Whitewright, where Mrs. Ayres has resided since, being the oldest citizen of that community. She was married to Marcus A. Ayres August 24, 1865. To this union three sons were born, all of whom survive. They are T.W. Ayres, Trenton, and J.C. and Jim Ayres of Whitewright. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. P. McKenna of Houston, who is the only surviving member of a family of nine children. Her husband died October 12, 1914. Mrs. Ayres was a member of the Central Christian Church.
