Adkins 1859 - 1939 The Whitewright Sun Thursday, August 17, 1939 pg. 8 Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Rebecca Adkins were held at the late residence, five miles northwest of Whitewright, at 4 p.m. Wednesday with Rev. Lloyd Mottley of Van Alstyne in charge. Interment was at Canaan Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Voll Dawson, Bryant King, Dan Dugan, Marvin Everheart, Jim Ayres, and Burn Everheart. The Glen Everheart Funeral Home had charge of funeral arrangements. Mrs. Adkins was 80 years old and was very active for one of her age, until she took ill two weeks ago. She was born in Kentucky March 28, 1859. At the age of two she was brought to Texas by her parents, who settled in East Texas. She was married to Phillip Adkins in 1879. Mr. and Mrs. Adkins resided on a farm northwest of Whitewright for more than fifty years. Mr. Adkins died about a year ago. They were among this section's best known people, and had many friends among the older citizens. Mrs. Adkins had been a member of the Christian Church for many years. Mrs. Adkins is survived by seven children: Mrs. John Windrow, Walters, Oklahoma; T.F. Adkins, Guthrie, Oklahoma; Mrs. George Dugan, Bells; J.W. Adkins, Walters, Oklahoma; Will C. Adkins, Walters, Oklahoma; Dee and Walter Adkins, who resided with their mother, and seventeen grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a half sister, Mrs. J.D. The Whitewright Sun Thursday, September 30, 1937 pg. 7 Funeral services for Phillip S. Adkins, 88, were held at the Central Christian Church here at 3 p.m. last Thursday, conducted by Rev. L. Guy Ament. Interment was in Canaan Cemetery, directed by Glen Earnheart of Trenton. Mr. Adkins died at his home near Canaan Wednesday of last week after several years of failing health. He was born August 2, 1849 in Mississippi and had lived in the Canaan community for many years. He had been a member of the Christian Church for 45 years. He was a charter member of the Bells I.O.O.F. Lodge. Surviving are his wife; 2 daughters, Mrs. George Dugan of Bells; and Mrs. Georgie Wendrow of Walters, Oklahoma; 5 sons, Tom Adkins of Asher, Oklahoma; James and Will Adkins of Walters, Oklahoma; and Dee and Walter Adkins of Bells; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
