Log Cabins Log
cabins used as homes were brought to the United States by people from
Sweden. Log cabins were built from logs laid horizontally.
Because there were no nails, the logs were interlocked with
notched ends or pegs. The above picture shows the walls of the
cabin with the rafters made from whole or split logs. The space
between the walls and the ceiling allows in insects, debris, and wind.
Consequently it was difficult to keep the log cabin clean.
The logs that made the walls were chinked with mud mixed with
grass; many times this substance was pushed out from between the logs
during hot weather to allow more air into the cabin.
