A large number of Comanches cross Red River at the mouth of the Big Wichita Sunday and drove off all the horses in the neighborhood.  The people of the northwestern counties look for an intensive raid and cattle men are endeavoring to drive their stock out of reach of the redskins if possible.
Rumors are rife that both the Kiowas and Comanches are preparing for a general war and there is but little doubt that they will succeed in their plans as the garrison at Fort Sill has been so reduced that there is hardly sufficient force to protect the post.  The commander of the post is disarming and dismounting the Indians as fast as he can catch them, but his operations in this line are necessarily limited on account of the heavy draft upon the post, of troops for the department of Missouri.  The worst is feared but cannot be prevented without extraordinary exertion on the part of the military.  The fact about the matter is that the administration has used the army to perpetuate partisan rule and left the frontier settlers unprotected.
