Pelican Publishing Co. 1841 Renowned black lawman Bass Reeves was born this year or perhaps the previous year in Arkansas, then removed with the Reeves family to Grayson Co., Texas. Reeves was apparently the first black deputy U.S. Marshall to be appointed west of the Mississippi.
