Death of N.T. Davis
Second Coroner's Jury Decides He was killed by unknown parties and not frozen to death.
Denison, Texas - Jan. 16 - The body of N.T. Davis, a brother in law of Mrs. L. J. Leverett of 418 Gandy Street, was brought to Denison Saturday night, from Winona, Tex., and was buried at Dripping Springs yesterday. The wife of the deceased relates the story of her husband's death as follows;
She and her husband were encamped about a mile from the little town of Winona and were en route from Bassett. Brown County, Tex., where her husband had been trapping. They had gone to this place from Denison a short time ago and were returning to Denison in a covered wagon, Thursday. Mr. Davis left camp for Paris, Tex. where he expected to receive a check for furs that he had sold. He said that he might be gone until Friday evening, and if he did not return until then not to be alarmed. Friday afternoon a man came to the camp and asked if her husband had returned and upon receiving a negative answer said that on the night before, Thursday night, Mr. Davis had come to his home , about two miles from Winoma, and said he was lost, and if the man would take
him to the railroad track and show him the direction to go that he was make it to his camp all right. This was 11 o'clock Thursday night.
A searching party was organized between 5 and 6 o'clock Friday afternoon and Davis' dead body was found not far from Winoma.
The body was some distance from the railroad and it was thought he had lost his way and froze to death. The first inquest held returned the verdict that he came to his death by freezing. When the body was prepared for burial it was discoverded that the man's neck was broken. The Coroner's Jury was again summoned and returned a verdict to the effect that Davis was killed by some means unknown. Whe the deadh man was found he had on his person $1.50. He was reported by a witness to have $12 or $15 in his pocket when he got off the Paris train Thursday afternoon.
The body was brought to Denison by L.J. Leverett.
