Desert, Texas The cemetery is located near the intersection of Hwy 78 & Hwy 160. Also known as Desert Cemetery. The
land for Crossroads Cemetery was donated by Asa Walker in 1892 at the
death of his first wife, Mary S. Browning Walker. The J.W.
Gordons gave additional land to the north, and either the church or the
cemetery association purchased more property to the south to attain its
current size. There are over 350 burial sites, representing some
50 families. A cemetery committee and care fund were established
in 1970.
Faith and family - two of the only things that endure at the end of our lives. There are stories to be discovered, if we only ask. Abbie Walker, younger sister of Hattie Thompson, died in 1923 of tuberculosis at the age of 21. Vernon Gordon's brother, Grady Lee, died in a fire in 1914 at the age of 15 months. THere were very few war death; only 2 comfirmed being 2nd Lt. Joseph R. McCurdy of the 300th AAF Fighter Squadron in 1944 and Lonnie C. Wilder, killed in action in Italy in 1945. There are names to be discovered if we only look. From the historical names no longer heard, like Elezerith and Vanus, Ruhemia, Ulys and Jetta, to Biblical names of Isaac, Beulah, Jesse, Reuben, Elijjah, Samuel and Hannah. From treasures of Ransom, Sterling, Ruby, Pearlie, and Jewel to the botanicals of Flora, Violet and Lillie, to the poetic in Emily, Ellen, Julia, and Malinda, these are names that echo in the imagination and in our own family histories.
