NEGRO CHILD FOUND DEAD ON DOORSTEP
Undertaking Establishment Operators Leave for Several Minutes and Finds Baby in Hann When He Returns Later

INQUEST IS HELD TODAY
Says Car Drove Into Alley Just Before He Left, But Failed to Make Any Connection

A newly born negro child, apparently only a few hours old, was found dead in a small box at the Chalmer's funeral home, 631 West Morton Street, late Monday night, after the operator had stepped out for a few minutes to visit nearby.
J.M. Chalmers, owner of the undertaking establishment, told Judge E.A. Wright, in a coroner's inquest, the he usually locked his doors when out of the place because he had missed several small articles in the past, but failed to do so when he left, between 9:30 and 10:00 p.m.
Chalmers said he noticed a car drive into the alley at the rear of his establishment when he left, but failed to pay any attention to it because many cars do the same thing each night.
He said on his return he looked over the rear end of his place before looking up, when his flashlight brought a small box into view.  He opened the box and found the body of the small negro.
Judge Wright said Chalmers claimed the car which drove into the alley shortly before, was an out-of-town car, but not necessarily connected with the case.
The investigation is to be continued, Judge Wright said.
