Daily Ardmoreite (Ardmore, Indian Territory) Tuesday, July 23, 1895 pg. 2 MUST BE PUNISHED There was a most heinous outrage committed in Denison the other night on the person of a little 8-year-old girl. The Denison Herald in commenting editorially on the crime and its fiendish perpetrator very aptly says: "The rape upon the person of Lena Goldman by Claude Turner is probably the blackest crime that has stained the record of Denison in all its history, but there was no need to railroad the criminal off to Sherman for safe keeping. He was perfectly secure here. There was no danger of lynching. The people, though deeply moved, showed no intention to take the law into their own hands. They felt that the prisoner would be summarily dealt with in due course of time when he stands for trial before a fair-minded jury, such as Grayson County can always be relied upon to furnish. The law in such cases is plain and the punishment inevitable. The law will deal with Turner even as he deserves, and the people of Denison are not disposed to interfere unless the machinery of the law proves inadequate to deal with the case. Then they may be heard from and in no uncertain tones." The Democrat McKinney, Texas Thursday, July 25, 1895 pg 3 GENERAL NEWS Claude Turner, a watchman at the roundhouse in Denison, is under arrest for criminal assault on a 9 year old girl. The Sunday Gazetteer Sunday July 28, 1895 pg 3 LOCAL CONDENSATIONS Monday, July 22, 1895 - Claude Turner, charged with having ravished Lena Goldman, aged nine years, was committed without bail by Justice Mixson. An Awful Crime On Saturday last complaint was made to the officers that Lena Goldman, a young girl living in this city, had been outraged, and the informers gave the name of the villain as Claude Turner. His arrest was effected, and the officers to prevent the lynching of the prisoner, took him to Sherman for safekeeping. Turner was arraigned before Justice Mixson on Monday, and waving an examination, he was committed without bail. Questioned by Prosecuting Attorney Maxey, the outraged little girl related in detail how she was lured to her ruin, which testimony is too revolting for general publication, identifying Turner as the man who committed the crime. The state made out a strong case against Turner, and he will, if found guilty, suffer the extreme penalty for such offenses. The child is improving under the treatment of the city physician and is now out of danger. The Sunday Gazetteer Sunday November 10, 1895 pg 4 LOCAL CONDENSATIONS Thursday, November 7, 1895 The case of the State vs. Claude Turner, charged with criminally assaulting a little girl in this city several months ago, has been set for Monday, Nov. 11, in the district court. The Sunday Gazetteer Sunday December 1, 1895 pg 2 LOCAL CONDENSATIONS TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 1895 The Goldman family, of whom so much has been said of late in connection with the Claude Turner trial at Sherman, have departed for parts unknown and it is now probable that the charge against Turner will be dismissed.
