 KILLING IN TIOGA
W.H. Shumate Shoots J.L. Bryson with a Shotgun Tioga, Texas, April 3, 1900 - J.L. Bryson, a livery man, was shot and killed here this morning. A shotgun loaded with buckshot was used. Eight of the shot took effect in Bryson's body. and he died immediately. A controversy growing out of a business transaction was said to have been the indirect cause of the tragedy. W.H. Shumate has placed himself in the custody of a citizen to await the arrival of officers. Sherman Texas, April 3, 1900 - J.L. Bryson, the local liveryman at Tioga, Grayson County, was shot and instantly killed in the general merchandise house of Wiley T. Shumate in Tioga, Texas, at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon. W.H. Shumate at once gave himself up. Justice Adams of Collinsville was at once notified of the occurrence and the affair will be inquested. Bryson and W.H. Shumate had some words, it is said, relative to the hauling of a load of goods by the latter's little son.  The Houston Post Houston, Texas April 4, 1900 Wednesday pg 4 KILLING AT TIOGA WELLS W. H. Shumate Surrendered; J. L. Bryson Is Dead Denison, Texas. April 3 - This afternoon at Tioga Wells, a watering resort near Whitesboro, Wiley H. Shumate a grocer, shot and killed J. L. Bryson, driver of an express wagon. The shooting took place in Shumate's grocery store. Immediately after the shooting, Shumate surrendered to Constable S. H. Wilson, who telephoned Sheriff Shrewsbury at Sherman. Shumate alleges self-defense. Shumate, after he surrendered to Constable Wilson, expressed regret that he had to shoot, and his friends say that he was acting purely in self-defense. Bryson the evidence showed clearly that W. H. Shumate, who surrendered to a peace officer after the killing, acted in self-defense and he was discharged without bail.
