Tuesday, May 19, 1917 pg. 4 OFFICER KNOCKED DOWN Charles Warbes of Preston Bend, who has been working for Sheriff Tom Roberts for some time in the capacity of a plain clothes man, was knocked down and badly beaten and kicked at noon today. This occurred on the southwest corner of the courthouse square, near the Hall annex. Officers immediately took in custody Red Odom and placed him in jail. So far he has only been charged with aggravated assault. Deputy Sheriff Ran Roberts and Deputy Sheriff Frank Reece stated this afternoon that Warbes is the principal witness against Charles Odom, father of Red Odom in several cases of alleged violation of the local option law. It was stated by the officers that Warbes was employed by Sheriff Tom Roberts some time ago on the recommendation of some of the best citizens of Grayson county and that he belongs to one of the best families in the county and bears a most excellent personal reputation. The officers also state that he has worked faithfully and successfully since his appointment by Sheriff Tom Roberts. When he was picked up at noon today by Joe Rigby and others who went to him as soon as they could get there after he was felled with a bottle, he was dazed and bleeding, and could not tell his name. He was taken to a physician's office and his wounds dressed by Dr. Andrew Swafford. He has a large gash on the back of his head, which Deputy Sheriff Frank Kidd states was made by a heavy glass bottle, and there are ugly gashes over and under his right eye, nose and in his right hand. These, the officers state, were made when Warbes was kicked after being knocked down.
