Charles Barr passed away Thursday, June 28, 2018 at The Homestead in Sherman.
Mr. Barr was born May 16, 1932 in Dakota, Illinois, the son of James and Alice Benson Barr.  Charles graduated from North Central College in 1954 with a BA in Chemistry.  From there he received his Masters in Biochemistry in 1957 and PHD in Biochemistry in 1960, both from Michigan State University.  Charles began his career at the University of Dubuque as a assistant Professor of Chemistry from 1958-1962.  That would prepare him for the next 31 years with Austin College as a Associate Professor, Professor, Ruport P. Lowe Professor of Chemistry from 1962-1993.  Also at various times he served as Emeritus Professor of Chemistry, Chairman of Chemistry Department and Dean of Sciences.  Professional Societies that he was involved in were American Chemical Society, American Association for the advancement of Science and Sigma Xi.  Professor Barr taught and helped many people over the years.
Mr. Barr is survived by his sister, Lucille Alden; 24 nieces and nephews and numerous great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Robert Barr, Harry Barr, Helen Barr Alden, Pauline Barr Fazio; and four nieces and nephews.
Mr. Barr was cremated according to his wishes and there were no services planned.
